There’s no denying that a rippling toned torso on a man is considered devilishly attractive; nor that a flat washboard stomach on a woman is anything but marvellous to behold. But how to get it? You can read endless articles out there which profess to have the secret to a flat stomach, watch hours of Youtube videos and mimic the personal trainer on screen – only to find that the belly fat simply won’t budge and feeling more frustrated a month later than you were when you started. The truth is, there are three key things you need to do to get that flat belly – so read on to find out!
- AVOID OBLIQUE EXERCISES. Yes, you may be wondering if you heard that right. Avoid oblique exercises. For those of you who don’t know, the obliques are the side muscles on your belly and you may have seen people at the gym doing endless rounds of oblique-targeting muscles or planks in an effort to slim down the waist. The truth is, regardless of what anyone says, targeting obliques too much can actually thicken the waist and what you end up with is a waist that looked bigger than it did originally, even if the muscle is coming through and the fat is melting off. The best abs exercises are the ones that target the lower abdominal muscles, especially for those who have a stubborn layer of belly fat (the pooch) sitting there.
- DO HIIT WORKOUTS. Don’t even bother spending an hour on a treadmill or forty-five minutes on the rowing machine. Ten to fifteen minutes of HIIT workouts have a far more powerful effect on that tight waist; you’re alternating usually between forty seconds of intense exercise and twenty seconds of rest. The intensity can be anything from quick lunges/squats, to star jumps, to stationary bike riding – anything to get your heart pumping. Not only is it vastly more effective, it’s also much less time-consuming and can be done before going to work in the morning or even during your breaks at lunch time.
- ABS ARE MADE IN THE KITCHEN: There is no escaping it. You cannot get flat abs unless your diet is in check. No more processed foods, no more sugar, no more snacks – just good old-fashioned fruit, vegetables, lean meats, fish and legumes. Cut down on salt as salt is a major culprit for bloating. You also need to consume about eight glasses of water per day. Another tip is to drink dandelion and horsetail tea (check with your doctor first if you are on any medications). Dandelion root and horsetail are both diuretics, which mean they flush out toxins from your body, leaving you nice, healthy – and with a flat belly! Two to four cups a day should do the trick.
So there you have the three main secrets to getting a flat belly. You don’t need to do hundreds and hundreds of crunches (which would yield poor results anyway). A good diet, regular HIIT workouts and abs workouts targeting your lower and upper belly will give you the results you want!
